preparation for the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic, NHSE needed to identify the scale
of available capacity to the NHS from the independent sector including
intensive care and other specialist capability.
Responding to a centralised national procurement we scoped the resource
and identified the capacity of the Independent sector to provide 8000
additional crisis beds across 149 provider organisations nationally. We
developed a national database of the bed capacity available by region in
independent hospitals identifying local NHS trusts in each region to take the
lead in allocating the additional capacity. We continue to provide
ongoing support for managing access to capacity working as part of a blended
team at national level.
