Devon STP developed the Local Maternity System (LMS) plan to transform maternity services and improve the lives of women and babies in Devon by providing safe, personalised, professional and high quality maternity services. SCW supported development of the LMS plan by creating a baseline assessment of the health and wellbeing of the population in Devon.
We engaged with stakeholders to develop the transformation plan. Workstreams included safety, prevention, personalisation and choice, continuity of carer, perinatal and infant mental health, workforce, communication and digital transformation. We also set up appropriate and robust programme governance.
The plan sets strategic direction for maternity services in Devon and is an overarching plan that meets the needs of women and families. It incorporates the clinical priorities and national policy that aims to improve safety, reduce variation and provide personalised care.
This system-level collaboration within Devon’s maternity services provides an operational network between providers to improve clinical effectiveness, safety and quality of services.
SCW’s ‘one team’ ethos helped us work in partnership with Devon STP to understand and address issues. By providing check and challenge in a coaching relationship, we were able to work with insight, empathy and expertise to find solutions.
“The support we have received from the CSU – Caroline Rowe in particular – has been extremely high quality and has, without any doubt, ensured that our plan has achieved its green, exemplar status with NHS England.”
