One story that came to light at these events is about the value of insight through analysis.
North East Hampshire and Farnham CCG commissioned SCW to investigate and estimate the length of stay in an acute setting compared to a community setting for various symptoms presented by patients. Symptom types were then converted into the Health Resource Group (HRG) to determine the costs for the healthcare provided.
The HRG analysis identified a number of Mental Health Primary diagnoses that were being treated by non-specialist mental health service providers; particularly as non-elective care admissions via A&E. Managing this correctly, by ensuring these patients were admitted into the correct care setting, could save up to £3.5m. So, this analysis actioned a piece of work with Frimley Health Foundation Trust’s A&E team to divert patients who were potentially better off in an alternative setting, improving patient pathways and saving money.
We are now looking at carrying out analysis for other customers with similar trends.
