Patient safety – all systems go

SCW’s Transformation Analytics team took over the management of the NHS Safety Thermometer from NHS Digital on behalf of NHS Improvement.

On 1 April 2017, SCW’s Transformation Analytics team took over the management of the NHS Safety Thermometer from NHS Digital on behalf of NHS Improvement. They had already been supporting the delivery of the 'Classic' and ‘Next Generation’ Safety Thermometers for a number of years, had introduced enhancements to the website, and worked with colleagues across the country to use and interpret the data collected right across the five NHS Safety Thermometer areas of:

  • ‘Classic’
  • Medications
  • Maternity
  • Children & Young People
  • Mental Health.

The team are took ownership of the Patient Safety Measurement Unit (PSMU) which will continue to be mobilised throughout June. SCW have been working closely alongside the PSMU steering group, including Professor Charles Vincent from the University of Oxford, to develop and promote the Safety Measurement Unit, most recently at the National Patient Safety Learning Event at the end of May.

As part of this development, we’ll be working with regional Patient Safety Collaboratives to improve the metric review process, ensure consistent definitions and processes across tools and support them in their measurement journey. We have also taken on the measurement and monitoring support for three core national areas:
  • Neonatal care
  • Deteriorating patients
  • Improving safety culture.
